How does this work?

About this group

The group assists vulnerable adults to live independently at home in their community of choice for longer. The group works with existing agencies and services to access grant aid, filling out forms, introducing individuals to specific services and carrying out minor repairs in homes where a professional cost would prove prohibitive. The group organises themed events to socially include persons in a non threatening environment.

Reasons to support this group

  • Sligo Lend a Hand provides a service that supports existing services There are many people who do not have relatives or friends close by to help with simple tasks, like fetching a bucket of coal or changing a light bulb in a high ceiling. These are very necessary requirements but not what you would call in a professional for. Sometimes callers are too proud to ask family as this might be seen as inability to live alone. The other option is to ask the first rogue trader who calls to the door.
  • Lend a Hand volunteers benefit as much from Lending a Hand as do the service users who receive a dig out. Chatting to users during visits brings an appreciation of life, good mental and physical wellbeing and a sense of usefulness.
  • The group picks up individuals who otherwise would fall between the cracks of state provision. There are many services available and advertised but if an individual does not know the name of the support or service then it is highly likely they will not get linked in. Switch boards and service access can be off putting particularly if individuals have specific impairments. Transport can prove difficult and expensive to get to services particularly in rural settings. Volunteers visit locally.
